First Question on page 198

Search engine optimization(SEO) is the key to making sure your sites gets found by people searching at Google and other search engines for the information, products,or services that some firms or businesses offer. This is very important for business marketing strategy and it means optimizing the website with right key words in the right places. Search engine optimization (SEO) is the process of improving the volume and quality of traffic to a web site from search engines via search results. Usually, the earlier a site is presented in the search results, or the higher it "ranks," the more searchers will visit that site. SEO can also target different kinds of search, including image search, local search, and industry-specific search engines. Webmasters and content providers began optimizing sites for search engines in the mid-1990s, as the first search engines were cataloging the early Web. By 1997 search engines recognized that webmasters were making efforts to rank well in their search engines, and that some webmasters were even manipulating their rankings in search results by stuffing pages with excessive or irrelevant keywords. Due to the high marketing value of targeted search results, I think, there is potential for an adversarial relationship between search engines and SEOs. Eye tracking studies have shown that searchers scan a search results page from top to bottom and left to right (for left to right languages), looking for a relevant result. Placement at or near the top of the rankings therefore increases the number of searchers who will visit a site. However, more search engine referrals does not guarantee more sales. SEO is not necessarily an appropriate strategy for every website, and other Internet marketing strategies can be much more effective, depending on the site operator's goals. Deciding to hire an SEO is a big decision that can potentially improve your site and save time, but you can also risk damage to your site and reputation. Make sure to research the potential advantages as well as the damage that an irresponsible SEO can do to your site.

I definitly agree that SEO can damage your site if you start manipylating too much. Google has a penalty system that will lower your rank immensly if you get caught doing unwanted SEO manipulation.

On another note, i think that SEO actually benefits google in a more subtle way. All search engines have their own algorithms to rank the results. But becaus Google is so dominant, everyone is doing their SEO with reference to Google's algorithm. This could potentially damage other search engines at the same time as it boosts Google.

Is it really positive for Google if their search results are manipulated by these optimizers? I would prefer results that were based on relevance and trustworthyness alone, without the influence of optimizers. So in my eyes it's actually a downside of Google's.

Anyway, I agree that SEO can damage sites, and I think it's interesting that Google punishes "rank cheaters". In the long run, nothing beats good content and good sites.

Well i wasn't refering to the "bad" SEO, just that companies are likely to construct their site to fit in with the google algorithm.

I agree with that SEO is one of main issue for online marketer. Mostly users who are first steps to the online, they feel reliance upon seach engine to get information. Because of their reliance, Search engine site get power of speech or discussion. Thesedays user approach a goods with many variuos ways. For the firm, they should also think about number of click that user made.

I agree that SEO can be damaging for both Google and the websites. For Google it's by having their search results manipulated and in this way loosing the trust of their users, and for the websites it's either by overmanipulating their own sites and being punished, or by having others manipulate themselves to the top even though you have the better content.
I'm actually not a big fan of SEO. Of course to some extent it's important, because you have to make it easier for the search engines to find your website and judge your content. But as soon as it goes further than that, into the roam of manipulating yourself to the top, I feel that I'm having a harder time trusting the search engine results.

Indeed SEO becomes important. In the US it is big and even companies specialized in SEO are there. However, in Korea, it is not the case yet, because naver, the largest search engine, works differently, it is more of 'closed' engine, and to get the optimum results, you would have to pay a lot... which I belive should be changed in the future.
