The linking issue is getting more and more interesting as people discover its importance.
A new interesting approach that I've seen increase in popularity lately is the "backlinking functionality". It's basically just a list of sites that have linked to your site (or subsite, article or such).
Such a list is automatic and gives a kind of "thank you" link back to people (sites) who link to your site, thus promoting linking, and in the long run giving you a larger amount of links.
Obviously it can have bad consequences since you could end up linking to sites of questionable content, but so far that doesn't seem to be a big problem.
Filip. That's interesting to see your comments on "thank you" link. I think blogging is a good example to show "principle of reciprocity." To my observation, people tend to exchange links, comments,and tackbacks with the people who linked, made comments, and trackbacks to your blog. People reciprocate normally, but, of course, for popular sites, it doesn't work that way.
Yea. linking and pagerank has allmost become a science. There exist so much material, models and systems. There are even companies who specialize in this area.
However, i'm not sure if this developement is good or bad. Originally pagerank was invented to srot among the searches, but now the internet has changed so i'm not sure if pageranking acually fills the original purpose.
Lets say you have two sites about rockclimbing. One is much better structured and has more information and so on. However, the other has used allot of tricks to raise it's pagerank. So what happens is that the worse site will get a higher pagerank.
My point is that now days the determining factor for your pagerank is not content. Instead it's a measure of the creators understanding of the new technology.
A good linking process can lead another good advertising. The marketing team of a company should analyze which linking could be more effective for the advertising. Web 2.0 decade, customer can participate many activities on online. And they are always treveling site to site or blog to blog which they are interested in. I think linking building has many positive point to the firm and customer.
I like the idea of link building to increase hits to a website rather than diverse SEO manipulation to improve one's pagerank. With SEO the content of the website doesn't really matter at all, whereas with link building, I don't think a lot of website will just link to random websites without at least making sure that the content somewhat matches their own content. Of course you can be manipulative with link building as well, but somehow I would put more trust in this approach rather than SEO.
